Data Types

Web portal technology can be integrated with a wide range of business systems. The portal has been developed around the Sage Line 500 environment running on Microsoft SQL. To generalise it is possible to connect to any data source providing the data type is supported by a suitable DSN driver. A DSN is a software component installed on the client system which provides a conduit into the data itself from other applications. We can advise you if your data type is supported on request or you could ask your supplier if an ODBC compliant Driver is available.

Typical data applications supported include:

Microsoft Access
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft SQL Server
Microsoft MSDE
mySQL
dBase
FoxPro
ODBC for Oracle
CSV Text Delimited Files
ODBC compliant Drivers

Connectivity

The web portals connect to the data source via a DSN, It is imperative that the client has an 'always-on' Internet connection such as Broadband, ISDN or Leased Line. Dial-up connect-on-demand connections are not suitable.

Firewall

Web portal technology can be configured to operate with a client firewall. Secure Authentication must be configured on the client side and access granted to the IP address of the hosting server. Of course web portal technology will operate in the absence of a firewall at the client end but it is strongly advised that a firewall be configured to protect the client network from intrusion.
